Virtual Railfan's LIVE train camera overlooks Norfolk Southern's famed Pittsburgh Line from the historic Station Inn in Cresson, Pennsylvania. Located atop the Allegheny Mountains at an elevation of 2,057 feet, Cresson is one of the busiest and most famous railfan destinations in North America.
Originally established along the Allegheny Portage Railroad in 1834, Cresson became a key Pennsylvania Railroad operating point after the railroad crossed the mountains in 1854. Today, Norfolk Southern continues that tradition with approximately 35 to 40 daily freight trains, frequent helper locomotive operations, Amtrak's Pennsylvanian, and RJ Corman Railroad movements.
Just across the tracks from the camera sits Norfolk Southern's now-closed helper facility, where locomotives are still regularly added to heavy freight trains climbing the Allegheny grades. Nearby attractions include the Cresson Railroad Observation Platform, Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark, Gallitzin, and the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site.
