June 17-Both ORs fledged beautifully today at 51 days of age! Now that they are out of the nest, they are officially juvenile hawks! Welcome to the off-nest world Juvie OR6 and OR7!
June 12-OR7 fludged or fell from the nest trying to land on the ledge and spent 3 days trying to get back to the nest until he was finally was successful! Since his fludge was unintentional, we'll wait for his intentional fledge back out of the nest hopefully soon!
June 10-The ORs are 44 days old today and fledge watch has officially begun! In the past at SU, chicks have fledged from 44 to 51 days so time will tell when these two fly!! Yesterday, OR7 fludged and hung onto the edge of the nest and archway for several minutes before pulling itself back into the nest! Let's hope their fledges have much less drama!
April 27--WELCOME TO THE WORLD OR6--named for its parents's initials, first chick of 2026 and sixth chick of Oren and Ruth's breeding lifetime hatched after 37 days of incubation.
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OR7 named for its parents' initials, second chick of 2026 and seventh chick of Oren and Ruth's breeding lifetime hatched after 34 days of incubation. We're THRILLED both chicks hatched on the same day like last year and will continue to follow them on BOTH SU Hawk Nest Cams!
Enjoy this front view of Red-tailed Hawk Pair, Oren and Ruth, as they arrive and leave their nest on a building archway at Syracuse University (SU) while sharing incubation duties for their 2026 brood. This will be the third brood for this pair of six year old hawks; they had three chicks in 2024 and two chicks in 2025. Oren hatched in 2020 on another archway at SU and returned in 2023 with his mate Ruth to carry on the legacy of his parents, SU-Sue and Otto, who raised 28 chicks from 2012 through 2022 before they both died of avian influenza in January, 2023.
