Nest Cleanliness

Barn owls lack a sense of smell and bring dead prey to the nest; some may rot. They also regurgitate pellets and do not clean nests. Natural nest sites stay this way until they collapse or fill up.
We clean nest boxes once per year, making them cleaner than natural nests. Cleaning too often can cause nest abandonment and remove beneficial insects.
