🚋🏛️Live view of Minami 1-jo Street in central Sapporo, where the streetcars run. The Sapporo Streetcar has been extended and cut back many times over the past century, shrinking from around 25 km at its peak to under 9 km today. The Ichijo Line along Minami 1-jo, though, was one of the three lines that opened on the very first day in 1918, and it still runs on the original alignment. The Sansei Building, at the back on the right, was built in 1924 as the Yabu Shoji Company Building — the oldest surviving reinforced-concrete office building in Sapporo, and a designated Sapporo Scenic Heritage property. It has stood here since six years after the first cars ran: a building that holds the memory of this street. Look at the middle of the frame, and the view may not be so different from the Sapporo of a century ago.

🚋Sapporo Streetcar (Sapporo Shiden)
The Sapporo Streetcar is Japan's northernmost tram line and one of the city's most beloved forms of transport. Its roots go back to 1909, when a horse-drawn railway was built to haul stone, and it switched to electric trams in 1918 to coincide with a major exposition; the city has run the line since 1927. At its peak in the 1960s the network stretched about 25 km, but much of it was closed as the subway expanded. In December 2015 a new section linking Nishi-4-chōme and Susukino turned the remaining route into a continuous loop of about 8.9 km, which takes roughly an hour to ride all the way around. Along the way it passes the foot of Mt. Moiwa, famous for its night views, as well as shopping streets, Nakajima Park, and the lively Susukino district. Riders can enjoy a mix of vehicles, from retro older cars to the sleek low-floor "Polaris" (with the newer Polaris II introduced in 2025), and in winter the brush-fitted "sasara" snow-sweeping trams are a seasonal sight. Through the winter months, which of course include the Sapporo Snow Festival, the line also runs colorful "wrapping" trams featuring celebrated Japanese IP characters, most notably the Snow Miku Streetcar based on the virtual singer Hatsune Miku.
